It started over a beer, as it always does- Howie Croft and Pete “Macca” McDonald have been friends and colleagues for over 25 years, flying choppers all over the northwest of WA and beyond. Getting hold of quality beers to their tastes was tough in the late 90’s, this led them to home brewing. This grew beyond a hobby and the boys started to realise they could do this commercially, with Macca completing a Certificate of Business Management in Craft Brewing.
The Wedgetail name and logo came about as they realised; they needed an iconic Australian identity for the brand. They settled on the suggestion from Maccas son Jack who was obsessed by Wedge tailed Eagles at the time, as there was a connection to the Pilbara region where they did most of their flying -in fact they spent a lot of time avoiding Wedgies in the sky – a great fit! The connection to the WA landscape still features through the earthy tones of the beer labels and tap rooms colour schemes. . .
7 years ago they built a large shed out of local stone on Howie’s property, that was to house their commercial Brewery which produced around 25’000 litres of beer annually (looking to double that with the new brewery & taproom). The boys focused on traditional styled beers made in a modern fashion. The core range includes crowd favourites such as the American Style Pale Ale, New World Pilsner & the ubiquitous Hazy IPA also some heavy hitters like the Double Choc Oatmeal Stout & Double Red Ale and the literal dark horse - the Munich Dunkel – Dark Lager
The taproom has been 4 years in the planning and is finally about to open its doors in early November. . . With 20 taps (This includes a few guest taps) regardless of taste you’ll find something you like or something new you didn’t know you liked! With all operations moving from the original brewery the 170 punters will have unique access to viewing an operational craft brewery due to the well planned layout of the venue and a mezzanine level that offers views down onto the brew floor.
The venue has a warm industrial feel, 170 guests over 2 levels and an alfresco area. . . Beautiful single piece marri slabs form the bar and food servery and the Marri and steel framed furniture was hand crafted by the Serpentine Mens Shed. Space is at a premium, but we’ve managed to even fit a kids play area under the stairs and there’s a 4m projection screen for the footy!
The food philosophy, like the beers is classics – done very well, with the menu designed to complement the beers and come out fast. Think Wood Fired (No gas) Neapolitan style Pizzas from our hand built oven, Burgers, Salads and Shares (Kids and dietaries are of course catered for) local, quality, seasonal ingredients are the hero on the menu designed by Head Chef Rhys Hura. There’s also a great list of WA wines and spirits including a solely WA gin list, and a few beer centric cocktails. One of the venues key focus’ is on warm, friendly service - “local and community” aren’t just buzz words for Wedgetail – after looking to create somewhere the team are happy to call our local and welcome everyone to share the great beer, delicious food and create fantastic memories with family and friends!
